JPE was engaged by Canterbury-Bankstown Council to undertake the assessment, strategic alignment and detailed concept development of a proposed active transport corridor connecting East Hills Station to Deepwater Park. The project formed part of Council’s Active Transport Action Plan and sought to address network gaps within the Georges River cycleway, improving connectivity to key employment, recreation and transport destinations.
JPE led the investigation and concept development of the proposed cycling route, including comprehensive desktop policy review, corridor site inspections and assessment of existing road geometry, parking arrangements, pedestrian activity, traffic movements and environmental constraints. The project required identification and evaluation of feasible route options across both on-road and off-road environments, including analysis of intersections, crossing locations, shared path opportunities and integration with existing transport infrastructure.
JPE undertook a structured multi-criteria analysis of alternative alignments considering safety, connectivity, user experience, constructability, environmental impacts and potential loss of parking or changes to traffic arrangements. Following identification of the preferred corridor alignment, JPE prepared detailed concept design documentation including typical cross-sections, intersection treatment concepts, signage and wayfinding strategies, cyclist facility planning, staging recommendations and high-level construction cost estimates.
The project also involved ongoing consultation with Council stakeholders to establish preferred infrastructure typologies, balance transport function with place outcomes, and develop a staged implementation strategy to support future funding and delivery.
