ST ANDREWS CATHEDRAL OBSERVATIONAL CARPARK / TRAFFIC STUDY

Project Overview

JPE was engaged by the City of Sydney to undertake an observational study and reporting exercise to inform future design decisions for the eastern forecourt of St Andrew’s Cathedral within Sydney Square. The project formed part of the City’s broader consideration of future public domain and movement outcomes in a highly sensitive civic and heritage setting bounded by Town Hall, St Andrew’s Cathedral, George Street, Bathurst Street and surrounding pedestrian spaces.  


The purpose of the study was to provide the City with a robust factual evidence base regarding how the forecourt parking area was being used, so that informed decisions could be made about the future function and design of the space.

Services Delivered

  • Parking Inventory: A 7-day parking survey of the area using strategically placed CCTV.  
  • Manual Intercept Survey: Monitoring pedestrian conflicts, vehicle occupant direction of travel and reason for visitation. 
  • Reporting: The comprehensive dataset covered all aspects of parking behaviour, occupancy patterns, and pedestrian interactions over the 7-day period.
